Artist's StatementWhy does one seek to make art? There is no universal response—only highly personal answers that cater to each individual’s view. Though some may merge and diverge like tributaries connected to the greater river, I have never found the same answer to that one question. To answer it myself and forge my own tributary off of the River Art, I find myself creating art for art’s sake, much like I pursue learning for learning’s sake.
Often, these two factors mesh and flow together as pivotal aspects of my work. Intimacy with material evokes a bond between ceramicist and final creation. Whether discernable to the viewer or not, I exert emotion into every piece I throw on the wheel. For art’s sake, I make work that I am able to invest myself in and channel some semblance of feeling into—a transference that will hopefully echo back to the eventual owners of the pieces. In doing so, my goal is that my emotion invokes their emotions. By striving to understand every facet of the ceramic media, for learning’s sake, I grow in familiarity with material. By immersing myself wholly in the process of creation, I take a form from start to finish so that it may bear the marks of diligence, craftsmanship, vibrancy, and care. I make art simply because it is what I feel compelled and moved to do, without rhyme or reason. Through action I seek to learn as well—about the vessels I take care to create, as well as myself: a living vessel that is continually immersed in the process of craftsmanship. |
